Summer of Sell, is a documentary that delves into the extraordinary clash between the devoted fan base of the Oakland Athletics and the team's owner. This film will be capturing the ongoing feud that erupted when the owner's intentions to relocate the team to Las Vegas clashed head-on with the unwavering passion of the fans in Oakland.  It's a film about Oakland A's fans, by Oakland A's fans.

In an unprecedented display of grassroots solidarity, the Oakland fans have orchestrated a resounding protest against the ownership's decision. The Summer of Sell, as this historic movement has come to be known, reverberated across the league, standing as a remarkable testament to the power of collective action. This documentary not only chronicles the evolution of this movement but aims to become an integral part of it, amplifying the voices of these dedicated fans.

Through this documentary, we aim to peel back the layers of what it means to be a devoted fan, revealing how victories and defeats hold the power to shape our days. The bonds formed over this shared love for the game run deep, bringing friends, families and even communities together with a common purpose.

With the final game of the Oakland A's season fast approaching, the filmmakers are urgently seeking financial support to ensure the success of this critical project. We are planning to shoot from Sep 20th to the 24th, but need financing to make that happen. Your contributions can play a pivotal role in documenting this historic moment in Oakland's history and in the battle to keep the A's rooted in their hometown.

This movie is about you the fans and we are therefore going to need a lot of source materials from the fans to put this project together. We are looking for all media you have of your fandom, especially this past year. We would love anything and everything from the Summer of Sell movement, including earlier protests outside and inside the Coliseum and the Reverse Boycott games. We are also looking to have photos or videos of fans all across the country participating in the SELL movement. So wherever you have documented your SELL shirts or cards, please send us the digital materials. We can’ t wait to see all of what this fan base has been recording!

KEY TEAM MEMBERS

Gabriel Cullen is a lifelong Oakland A’s fan. He grew up ten minutes from the coliseum and some of his fondest memories are going to games with his family, watching all time greats like Rickey Henderson and Reggie Jackson. The story is so important to tell because he has lived through it. He’s felt the anger and sadness as one of his greatest loves is looking to be stripped away from him and he looks forward to the opportunity to tell the stories of so many fans like him. Gabriel is also an accomplished filmmaker known for his ability to craft compelling narratives. With "Summer of Sell," he brings his unique storytelling style to shine a light on the dedicated leaders of the Summer of Sell movement, showing how their family, friends and community are intertwined with the Oakland A’s.

Jared Isham is a Bay Area native, lifelong A's, and passionate supporter of keeping the A's in Oakland. His films include Bounty (2009), Turn Around Jake (2013), and Art of the Brew (2023).  Before joining the Summer of Sell Documentary team he was working on a short-form documentary focused on keeping the A's in Oakland.  After 20+ years living in LA, Jared returned to NorCal (reasons to attend more home A's games although his wife may disagree).  Now very excited to help share the story of the Summer of Sell, doing all he can to keep the A's in Oakland

John Henion is a filmmaker with a history of elevating content and groundbreaking storytelling across genres.  Most recently he worked alongside Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney as the Showrunner and creative lead behind the FX/HULU hit series WELCOME TO WREXHAM.  Over his two-decade career, John has helped change the look and feel of modern documentary television, while producing and/or directing a variety of premium docuseries including the original series CHEF’S TABLE, FEARLESS and THE PLAYBOOK for NETFLIX, DEAR…for Apple+, ROAD TO SHOW and THE PECOS LEAGUE for FOX SPORTS.  His work has been recognized by the Emmys, the Critic’s Choice Awards, the International Documentary Association, and the James Beard Awards. John lived in the Bay Area for more than ten years, five of them in Oakland.  He was a big fan of $2 Wednesdays and $1 hotdogs at the Coliseum, the Warriors, the A's and the Raiders.
